Traditional Swedish Glögg {Mulled Wine}
| December 9, 2012 | Posted by Camilla under Good Food, Good Times, Scandinavian Food |
Before I left the Motherland (Sweden, that is) I never gave making home made Glögg a second thought. At home you just go to the liquor store (Systembolaget) and buy a bottle or three already made. Or, you go to the grocery store and purchase a premixed bag of mulled wine spices and boil said spices with red wine .
The latter is what I did for my first few years living in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Mom would send me a Christmas care package and amongst other things was always the Glögg mix.
Then last bear my little sister came to visit us in Colorado for Christmas, and instead of bringing the usual suspect premixed bag, she had made me a scrap book of our family favorite holiday recipes. Look at it – is it not the prettiest thing ever?!
I’ve made Glögg with many different types of red wines, and in the end I’ve found that cheap ol’ Carlo Rossi Burgundy works just as great as any other more expensive bottle after you’ve done the deed of adding spices and vodka. And for those of you who might wonder what a cardamom pod is, here is a depiction of the tree different types of cardamom you have to choose from when cooking.
Ingredients
- 3 cups red wine
- 1/2 cup vodka
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 8 whole cloves
- 12 cardamom pods
- 1/4 cup raisins
- 2 tablespoons slivered almonds
- 4 tablespoons granulated sugar
Directions
- Add all of the ingredients to a pot, and over medium heat bring to a low simmer. Transfer to a crock pot and let steep on Low for at least one hour.
- Strain spices from wine, serve warm with raisins and slivered almonds or enjoy on its own.
Just this morning I learned of Shine Supper Club “Sweet Holiday Treats” collection of Holiday Recipes and think this heart and cheek warming tradition will is the perfect addition to the collection. Go visit the Supper Club for more good ideas on Holiday Entertaining.

This wine is a must for the cold holiday season! It warms you up from the inside out. Because the wine is served warm it is the perfect sipping drink.
And there is always more to be had for you!
What a sweet, meaningful present from your sister! I find that gifts like that at Christmas time will always be my favorite.
We’re celebrating our favorite traditional holiday recipes on the Shine Supper Club this month and I hope you’ll join us. A recipe like this would be a really marvelous contribution!
Thanks for bringing this to my attention, Sarah! I will check that out.
Now I also have to try to make my own glögg instead of going to Systembolaget an by it already made
Love Mom
Let me know what you think
Oooh, I’ve sipped glogg before, but never tried making it myself. This looks delicious and so wonderfully festive, I can’t wait to give it a try!
And its really easy to whip together, although tastes like a labor of love!
